Fantasy World Building, part 13

This week’s collective fantasy world building exercise will be a short one.

In many of my favorite fantasy novels, there are two sides to magic, there is usually a Light and Dark magic, or Positive and Subtractive, magic of Creation and magic of Destruction. High Magic and Low Magic. Our collective world has just such a system in the Low Magic used by Westley and the High Magic used by the evil Radoslav.

But in the very best ones, there are other, older and more subtle forms of magic. This works incredibly well when this other form of magic is disguised as an art form. Dancing, poetry, painting, etc. In the Sword of Truth series, there was a man who painted spells on the walls of a special cave. Terry Brooks’ Shanara had the Wishsong. I’ve seen books with sand-painting working magic, or candle magic or even magic worked through following a recipe.

In my own novel, Of Poets and Angels, I have several. Ethan uses poetry to work changes upon reality, or to command people’s thoughts. This works best when he uses Haiku, or when he speaks in the Ancient Tongue, the language of Angels. Ethan’s friend Cesar heals using Chei needles, which are based upon a knowledge system similar to the Qabalah.

Westley and Radoslav use both sides of our big, showy magic, and Sophia, our female protagonist is some kind of Seer. But to contrast this, I would like to see something else, something older and perhaps more sinister. Magic used by someone who opposes Westley.

So what kind of ancient and simple magic should we put in our world?

Radoslav is ancient, and (presumably) pretty wise, he would rather use a lot of resources at once for a result that will last a long time…

Lets say he diverted a major river or mountain runoff to go another direction, or built a mountain range through former prairie land because he was at war with the occupants of that land. This had the consequence of turning what was formerly a desert into a lush Greenland where a farming community was starting to develop.

Fast forward a few hundred (thousand?) years and we have Wesley’s home. Some artifact is still holding up the mountain, or adjusting gravity just enough to change water flows, or something. Because this magic is part of Radoslav it needs to be dealt with else he could continue on because of it.

I don’t quite see how this fits in with an older, more subtle form of magic used by neither Westley or Radoslov…
Maybe there is an inexplicably lush green mountain in the middle of a dry desert, but the water has been diverted by someone who lives there. Westley can get to know the people who live in the mountains, they are good folk, honest and generous, and totally dependent upon their liege, who uses some ancient form of magic to bring the water.
If Westley defeats this man, then the townsfolk loose their water source, their crops will wither, and they will starve.
This leaves him with a rather tough choice.
But how is this evil liege-lord bringing the water? Does she Dance it there? Or weave it? Or bind storms with song? Does she carve spells onto living trees, twisting and torturing the tree’s spirit to cast the spell?

I like the idea of twisting the tree’s own life force. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Heart trees from Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” saga. Faces in the trees watch and perhaps even steal energy from passersby. Not much mind you, just a little from each traveller. The traveller would feel more fatigued than expected at the end of their trip through a certain part of the forest/lush area.

OK, that’s a good creepy location, but not what i was looking for.
What this post was about, was a different type of magic. A different method of creating change upon the world, preferably some kind of art-form.
I keep getting suggestions for places, which is good, but creating a world is more than just about places. Its about people, its about customs and flavor and style.
Right now, I am looking for suggestions for a new kind of magic. Not the magic Radoslav uses, and not the magic Wesley uses.

What I described WAS magic. the magic is carved into the trees, twisting their spirits and making them into slaves of the wielder of the magic. This person (because that is what you said you were looking for originally) Could be a hermit, gender undetermined. THis could be because it is not readily apparent, or could be deliberately disguised. Now. Somone else help a girl out and give more details.

Alright then, tree-carving that binds the soul of the tree, using whatever bits of the Shattered God within to work the carver’s will.
Trees that sap the will any who look upon them to work their twisted magic.
Nice.
